WYWHlogoBoutiques from London’s Newburgh Quarter swap places with Lower East Side shops

A transatlantic experience linking two like-minded destinations: London’s Newburgh Quarter and New York’s Lower East Side. The ‘Wish You Were’ swap is about an exchange of cultures, lifestyles, and attitudes.

From August 20th to September 13th a celebrated slice of London will descend on New York’s Lower East Side, followed in October by a reciprocal visit to the Newburgh Quarter featuring Big Apple’s best. This is a unique event with an exchange of 30 independent boutiques reflecting signature trends in the form of fashion, accessories and lifestyle elements set within exciting ‘popup’ shops. All designers taking part in this project will be completely new to each city, bringing an element of welcome surprise emphasizing each other’s desirable design diversity. The Newburgh Quarter and Lower East Side have, for several decades, been renowned for their individual styles – edgy, vibrant, fun and punchy, also in their own way, iconically metropolitan.

We are most definitely checking this out.

I wouldn’t say the 80s influence is back, as much as I would first have to ask…Did this style ever really leave us? Many of you detest it, we get that. However, take a minute to consider the pros…baggy, comfortable, ripped, shredded, loads of cotton and you can never have too many accessories. It almost sounds like a Saturday-afternoon-lounging-around-the-apartment style that you get to wear in public. Yes, intentionally omitted from the list is the 80s ubiquitous shoulder pads but we’ll just skim over that bit.

TopShopearrings

When checking out the new arrivals section of TopShop’s website you can’t help but be mowed over by this generation. It looks like a high school yearbook from 1985. And not that that’s a bad thing. It’s fun and that’s exactly what sums up the overindulgent generation that inspired this look.

I think it’s when the masses turn once again to the krimping iron that we can truly say the 80s have returned.
