london fashion week

London Fashion Week is now underway and thanks to A La Mode, we’ll be seeing it through the eyes of the emerging designer.

Berit New York showed on opening night, alongside 2009 New Zealand Veuve Clicquot Businesswoman of the Year, Annah Stretton. Having shown at the last four Australian Fashion Weeks, Stretton is consistently re-inventing herself and bringing fresh and stunning feminine looks to the runway.

Day two showings (2/19) include self-taught Romanian designer Belinda Liu who returns to LFW with her classic feminine designs. Liu launched her self-titled label ‘Belinda Liu’ in 2009 and has since successfully shown at Bucharest Fashion Week and last season as part of the A La Mode International London Fashion Week Show with her collection entitled “La Marquise de Sade”. The line was based around the concept of a modern Marie Antoinette and shown to a packed house of industry professionals. She returns this season with much anticipation.

Ugandan designer Gloria Wavamunno draws much inspiration from her heritage. Wavamunno confirms the pulse of London Fashion Week is like no other and focuses much support on new designers, stating ‘London Fashion Week has a vibe whereby anything goes.’ The Autumn/Winter 2011 collection will be shown at the Charing Cross Hotel, The Strand on Saturday 19 February 2011 from 7.30pm.

As New York Fashion Week winds down, buyers, models, press and crews of all sorts will be bidding adieu to the 60 degrees about to hit the Big Apple as they descend upon Londontown and become emerged in LFW festivities.

The A La Mode shows have sparked a buzz that landed Berit New York on our radar. F.I.T. grad, Britney Frady-Williams, will return to London Fashion Week after the success of last season’s debut show to showcase her new A/W 11 collection from her label ‘Berit New York’. The designer’s vintage-meets-futuristic trademark is expected to once again be the focus and as we’ve seen at NYFW this season, it’s all about blending contrasting fabrics which is no stranger to this line. Last season, it was Berit’s unique use of contrasting metallics and historical influences with a futuristic twist that peaked the interest of buyers and press. What will this season hold?

Date: Fri 2/18

The international bi-annual London Fashion Week Catwalk show ‘A La Mode’ showcases some of the most outstanding emerging and Independent designers to an audience of buyers, press, upscale consumers and other fashion professionals. Stay tuned for more designer coverage as LFW kicks off.

Are you really ever the #1 fan of anyone? No. We tend to forget the term is short for fanatic which in full fan-spirit leads one to the world of stalking and restraining orders. Not a very fashionable opening on our part for LFW, but we simply couldn’t jump in without acknowledging our love for Mr. Alexander McQueen. We will simply say we were a HUGE fan and to quote another fan…”How will we ever look good without you?”

Among fashion designers, friends, industry professionals, and McQueen fans, the Prime Minister’s wife, Sarah Brown opened London Fashion Week AW10 with a minute of silence in memory of the late Alexander McQueen. Chairman of the British Fashion Council, Harold Tilman, paid a warm tribute to the talented designer and referred to him as a “genius” and “one of London’s leading lights”. Despite the sad passing of McQueen, Mrs. Brown said: “I’ve no doubt this will be a creative and inspiring Fashion Week.”

Inspiring and high tech…more than 40 designers at LFW are live streaming their FW10 shows including Paul Costelloe, Caroline Charles, Betty Jackson, John Rocha, Jasper Conran, Danielle Scutt, Henry Holland, Boudicca, Daks, Jaeger, Savannah and Sienna Miller’s Twenty8Twelve collection, and Australia’s Sass & Bide. Central Saint Martin’s MA graduates catwalk show is also on the digital agenda. It’s easier to count who is not streaming live.

To watch the remaining shows, check LFW LIVE for all updates.

Meanwhile, in Milan, Dolce & Gabbana has announced that both its mainline show and the younger, diffusion brand, D&G, will be “live” on SmartPhones and Androide mobiles.

On a final note, Alexander McQueen’s AW10 line was near completion prior to his death and will be shown in a private setting during Paris Fashion Week.

In the meantime, a few shots from the queen of punk, Ms Vivienne Westwood…
