Neutrogena

neutrogena blue smokeBrand: Neutrogena

Product: Nourishing Eye Quad (Blue Smoke)

As I was saying….. I picked this item up on BOGO at Walgreens along with an eye pencil (which I reviewed last week). I was fairly impressed. Application was smooth and not chalky. The color (worn over a primer) lasted all day. The packaging seems sturdy and compact, which is great for those of us who do most of our makeup application at the gym, or, heaven forbid, the car.

Bogo is the only way to go if you plan to pick up this product though. It’s pricey for a drugstore score. It retails at about $9.99 when not on sale. Ouch!

Product: Deep Clean Gentle Scrub

Everyone knows that makeup is best worn over clean, moisturized, exfoliated skin.  The problem is that most exfoliators are extremely harsh and strip skin of healthy oils.  I got turned on to Clinique’s 7 Day Scrub several years ago.  I’m a sucker for free samples and Clinique hooked me big time with this product.  A creamy exfoliator is genius for those of us with dry or sensitive skin.  It lived up to its name, it was so gentle that I really could use it seven days a week.

At $18.00 for 3.4 ounces, about the only flaw I could find with Clinique’s 7 Day Scrub was the price.  After finally depleting my supply, I decided I had to find a less expensive alternative.  It took some trial and error, but I did find some less pricy but completely worthy alternatives.

One of my new favorite scrubs is Neutrogena’s Deep Clean Gentle Scrub.  Like most, if not all Neutrogena products, this scrub is oil free.  That’s not exactly a selling point for me, but it seems like everyone these days looks specifically for oil free products.  The product is rich and creamy, and yes, very gentle.  The scrub contains microbeads that exfoliate softly.  It also contains beta hydroxy which deep cleans as it exfoliates, thus rendering a separate cleanser unnecessary. The rich lather rinsed clean and reveals skin that glows. Neutrogena’s Deep Clean Gentle Scrub retails at Walgreen’s for $5.24 for a 4.2 ounce tube. The only drawback is that I wish it didn’t smell like a Creamsicle.

Product: Facial Cleansing Bar

So, maybe I tend to review products that have been on the shelves forever rather than the new, hip, so very NOW product that everyone is talking about. It’s just that I think sometimes we are tricked into believing that if it is new on the market, and requires an equity loan to buy, than it MUST be better. Perhaps there is a theme coursing through my entries, and that theme is, if it has been on the market FOREVER, there MUST be a reason! Case in point…Neutrogena’s facial cleansing bar.

Back in April I was rushed to the hospital in the throes of labor, and (surprise, surprise), I had not packed an overnight bag. The lovely nurses of Centrastate graciously gave me a complimentary overnight toiletry kit which contained the Neutrogena facial cleansing bar. I had been a faithful Cetaphil customer for more than ten years, but I recognized the little bar in the kit, and was eager to try it. Now, as if torn between two lovers, I am torn between these two products.

Neutrogena’s facial bar comes in fragranced (original) and non-fragranced versions. It retails for $2.24 for a 3.5 ounce bar. The key to usage is restraint! A little goes a long way, and thus, the bar lasts FOREVER. The gentle, glycerine-rich bar does not clog pores and leaves skin so fresh and clean that I don’t find a separate makeup remover necessary. Daily use does not irritate my dry, sensitive skin as long as I follow with a rich moisturizer. A woman with oily skin might only need a light water-based moisturizer to follow. I flirted with giving the product 5 stars, but I don’t love how “tight” my face feels after each use, even though I no longer feel the “tightness” once I moisturize. So, perhaps Cetaphil has a slight edge over Neutrogena’s cleansing bar, but the cleansing bar is a workhorse, and a very fairly priced one at that.
