Olay

Brand: Olay
Product: Definity Color Recapture

I love the idea of paring down my makeup routine in the summer. Moisturizer, sunscreen, foundation; it all seems a bit much at any time of the year. In the heat and humidity of the summer, such a routine seems unbearable. A tinted moisturizer with SPF seemed like it would be the answer to my prayers.

For years I have coveted Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer. Reviews for the product are extremely favorable. Users rave that it is lightweight, provides excellent coverage, and moisturizes very well. It’s SPF formula protects skin from the harmful summer rays. It is the perfect product, except for the $42 price tag.

Olay seemed to have the answer for my woes in their Definity Color Recapture line. Here was a moisturizer with a touch of foundation wrapped in SPF 15 goodness. Sadly, it was not to be. The color selection was poor. The lightest shade is way to dark for anyone with very fair skin. My own skin is middling fair, and the moisturizer turned up a strange shade of orange on me. DCR is moisturizing, and the sunscreen surely works, but it is not at all weightless. The product seems to sink into the pores. I happened to glance in the mirror about an hour after application and was taken aback by what I can only describe as the “beading” of the product on my face. Not attractive. Not even a little. At $25 a bottle, Definity Color Recapture is certainly less expensive than Laura Mercier’s offering. However, at $25 a bottle, DCR is not at all cheap. I expected quite a bit more. I’ve noticed Olay price points are escalating, while the quality of their products are declining. This disappoints me as I’ve always respected Olay for creating quality skin care for babes on a budget. Olay may be a household name, but if the company believes that their name alone is enough to sell their product, they are mistaken. I seem to remember an ill-fated cosmetics line that once bore the Olay name.

Product: Regenerist Night Recovery Moisturizing Cream

Olay’s Regenerist Night Recovery Moisturizing Cream is simply “meh”. It didn’t dry out or irritate my skin, but I didn’t find my skin any more moisturized or any more firm after using it. It also smelled a bit funny. At $18 for a 1.7 ounce jar, I expect a bit more. Okay, a LOT more. Sure, it’s less expensive than a department store brand, but $18? Olay, are you kidding me??

Product: Daily Facials Hydrating Cleansing Cloths (Normal to Dry)

Sometimes we stumble upon great products completely by accident. Case in point: Last week I stormed Costco, coupon book in hand and gleam in my eye, eager to buy those fabulous Olay pre-moistened cloths that I have become addicted to. That night, I dragged my lazy self to the bathroom mirror with the intent to wipe away my makeup only to discover that I had not actually bought the pre-moistened cloths that I had thought I had. I purchased dry cleansing cloths (in bulk) by mistake.

Costco has a great return policy, but the nearest one is about a half an hour away, which reeked of effort. So I did what any other lazy woman would do, I said “eff” it. In this case my laziness paid off. Even though they are not as easy and convenient as the pre-moistened cloths, I really liked the product. Each dry cloth once moistened, produces enough lather to cleanse you face and neck, and even your whole body if you are so inclined. As the packaging indicates, the cloths really can be used every day. I have been using them for about a week and my dry skin looks and feels great. The cloths are soft and textured, and the raised weave seems to act as an exfoliator. Bonus!

The downside of these cloths is that if you buy them at a retail chain like Target, they can be a bit pricey. There they retail for $5.89 for a package of thirty. That may be a lot for some to spend on a product that is supposed to be used daily. I think they would be a great item to tuck into your gym bag or weekender though.
