Brand: Sarna
Product: Moisturizing Anti-Itch Cream

I thought I knew everything there is to know about how to treat a sunburn. Having had several terrible burns under my belt, (I’m Irish, ’nuff said) I’ve slathered myself in aloe and undergone dermatological steroid treatment. I’ve even sat in bathtubs filled with vinegar (save your Summer’s Eve douche jokes, I’ve heard them all from college roommates). Yesterday, however, my poor Scottish husband forgot to apply sunscreen before running a half marathon. He ran the race in 90 degree heat along the Jersey coastline. The sun beat down on his neck the entire day. By the end of the race his neck was crimson, and he hovered on the verge of sun poisoning.

I stopped in Walgreen’s yesterday after the race to pick up a prescription. The friendly pharmacist rang up the aloe gel I tossed in my basket and off handedly asked me if I was purchasing it to soothe a sunburn. When I answered yes, she voided the sale and pointed to a display behind me. She advised me to buy a bottle of Sarna and promised me it was “incredibly effective, and all I really need”. It was two bucks cheaper than the aloe, so I trusted her and had her ring up the Sarna instead.

This afternoon I fielded a phone call from my very happy husband. He’s been applying Sarna throughout the day and is impressed with the results. “That stuff is really pretty awesome,” he declared. This is a huge endorsement coming from a man who rarely sees the point in taking medications or using treatment products.

Sarna is a dermatologist recommended ant-itch cream that soothes eczema, rosacea, poison oak and ivy as well as sunburn. A 7.5 ounce bottle retails for $9.99 at your local Walgreens. Arm yourself with a bottle. Sunburn season is upon us!
